Equality Objectives

Equality Policy

2022 - 2025

  • Review and revise all curriculum areas, including SMSC, to ensure that Learning Journeys and resources address all forms of discrimination and promote positive attitudes towards a broad and diverse range of people.
  • To ensure all staff and governors access and benefit from regular training  from a range of providers, both internal and external, leading to  a better understanding of the 2010 Equalities Act and how these equalities objectives are relevant at Garratt Park.
  • To improve the offer, engagement and progress of girls in sport.
  • To monitor and reduce the use of racist, sexist and homophobic language by students in our school. If such incidents occur, they will be challenged and we will support our young people  so that they understand and respect other people’s views and beliefs and the law.
  • To empower students to understand and own their individual learning needs and advocate for themselves in life.
  • To ensure provision is available for students who are disadvantaged and promote support for families to reduce barriers to learning.

  • Review and revise all curriculum areas, including SMSC, to ensure that Learning Journeys and resources address all forms of discrimination and promote positive attitudes towards a broad and diverse range of people.

We chose this because our own review of learning journeys, resources and display, along with comments on  staff surveys and student focus groups show that areas of the curriculum do not always reflect the racial/cultural diversity of our students. Work has begun through our engagement with the external provider The Black Curriculum, but this was only a first step in the process. They have not all moved with the times to reflect changing attitudes towards gender and sexual orientation.

We will measure this by evaluation of Learning Journeys, displays, learning observations, walk throughs, work scrutiny, other planning and evaluation of quality of education

  • To ensure all staff and governors access and benefit from regular training  from a range of providers, both internal and external, leading to  a better understanding of the 2010 Equalities Act and how these equalities objectives are relevant at Garratt Park.

We chose this because of comments received from staff and comments noted on CPOMS

We will measure this by staff feedback, CPOMS, performance management and recruitment & retention.

  • To improve the offer, engagement and progress of girls in sport.

We chose this because girls progressed less well than boys on tracker analysis, there are fewer girls attending clubs and sports teams.

We will measure this by PST trackers, attendance at clubs, participation in sporting events

  • To monitor and reduce the use of racist, sexist and homophobic language by students in our school. If such incidents occur, they will be challenged and we will support our young people  so that they understand and respect other people’s views and beliefs and the law.

We chose this because there has been an increase in reports on CPOMS and student focus groups comments,

We will measure this by CPOMS incidents/ Student survey.

  • To empower students to understand and own their individual learning needs and advocate for themselves in life.

We chose this because comments by students and staff both anecdotally and at annual review suggest students and their families are not always aware of their special needs or are embarrassed by it and therefore not able to advocate for themselves which decreases their independence.

We will measure this by next steps / Surveys/ Student Passports/ Annual reviews

  • To ensure provision is available for students who are disadvantaged and promote support for families to reduce barriers to learning.

We chose this because data shows that students who are PPM/FSM bursary do not perform as well as non PPM - particularly in arts/ English. Attendance is also a significant issue for some and safeguarding concerns have been identified to show that some students are living in poverty.  Cost of living crisis means that this is likely to be increased

We will measure this by Progress of PPM & 16 - 19 bursary students / Attendance/ CPOMS reports

Aims

These objectives are set in accordance with the Public Sector Equality Duty, as detailed in The Equality Act 2010. The Act requires that equality objectives are reviewed every four years. Garratt Park School will review the objectives every two years.

All staff are aware of these objectives, and are expected to work towards them.

The aims of our Equality Policy are:

  • To promote and embed equal opportunity in all facets of school life.

  • To raise awareness throughout the whole school community in the teaching and learning of the principles of equal opportunities.

  • To foster positive attitudes and a commitment to an education for equality.

  • To meet every students’ individual special educational needs

  • To ensure inclusive education for all members of the school community

  • To ensure that under-performing groups of students are identified and action taken so that progress can be maximised. This may include, in addition to protected characteristics, setting of objectives for  the progress of deprived students.

  • To ensure that equality objectives are regularly reviewed and made public.
